The activist and journalist Yegor Zhukov, a critic of the Kremlin, was seriously injured in an attack in Moscow. The 22-year-old had to go to the hospital due to lacerations to his face and suspected traumatic brain injury, as Echo Moskwy radio station reported Monday. He suffered no serious internal injuries, Zhukov’s team said. Now he has been discharged from the hospital.

Zhukov, who is a well-known blogger in Russia, works for the station after the state banned him from operating an Internet video channel. His shows have high ratings. For example, Zhukov interviewed opposition leader Alexej Navalny, who is now being treated at the Berlin Charité for serious symptoms of poisoning.

Zhukov’s team posted images of the injuries on social media (see below). Consequently, the young man’s head continued to be struck when he was already on the ground. According to Echo Moskvy editor-in-chief Alexei Wenediktov, Zhukov filed a complaint with the police. Two unknown men are said to have ambushed the activist in front of his apartment on Sunday after a broadcast and then beat him.

According to their own statements, the capital’s police have launched an investigation. According to Zhukov’s team, strangers tried to attack him at his front door a month ago. But he was able to flee there. There have been multiple threats.

Barely clarified cases

Time and again there are serious attacks against those who think differently in Russia, which are hardly ever clarified. Zhukov is considered a talented and extremely resourceful political leader. He also once said that he wanted to become president of Russia. He is a sharp critic of the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, and is an example of the politicization of youth in Russia. Last year, as a student, Zhukov also appeared at opposition protests. A court sentenced him to three years of probation and prohibited him from running his own Internet websites for two years. Broadcaster Echo Moskwy later added him to its editorial team.
