Continuous rain keeps fire departments busy: four-year-old boy falls into the well
Heavy rains over the weekend had parts of Switzerland under control. There was flooding in many places – landslides and water avalanches kept firefighters on their toes. In Wil SG there was an accident with a four year old boy due to the rain.
From Friday to Sunday it rained heavily in Ticino and Graubünden. In some places, more rain fell in a few hours than in an entire month of August. According to SRF-Meteo, there was the highest amount of rain with 294 millimeters at Cevio TI in the Maggia Valley.
In Mosogno, in the Onsernone Valley, there was a total of 278 millimeters of rain and in the Locarno region about 260 millimeters. In the canton of Graubünden, the highest amount of rain was measured from Friday to Sunday at the Bernina pass with 215 millimeters.

For the first time in 14 years, weather services issued the highest severe weather advisory on Saturday. Rain Alert Level 5 was applied in northern Ticino and in the adjacent areas of Graubünden and in the canton of Uri.
After heavy rains in Ticino, a new focus was put on eastern Switzerland on Sunday. The total amount of precipitation from Friday night to Sunday night was 148 millimeters at Braunwald GL, 139 millimeters at Ebnat-Kappel SG, and 127 millimeters at Bad Ragaz SG.
Four year old boy falls on the shaft
In Wil SG there was an accident due to rain: a four-year-old boy fell into a well, the lid of which no longer covered the opening due to the heavy rain. The boy was washed away along with rainwater through an underground canal. Firefighters were able to rescue him from another well. The boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Also in other parts of the canton of St. Gallen, the rains kept fire departments busy. Due to the large amount of rain in the canton of St. Gallen, the trails and cycle paths along the Rhine from Diepoldsauer Rheinbrücke to Lake Constance will remain closed for safety reasons, as announced by the International Rhine Regulations. Alertswiss issued a flood warning for the Thur area on Sunday.
Continued rain also kept firefighters busy in Zug and Schwyz. Also in Lucerne, floods caused traffic obstructions.
On Sunday there were landslides in Ticino, especially in the Verzasca Valley, and the Maggia was flooded. After a landslide, the Malojapass was closed to all vehicles on Sunday, the Lukmanierpass was reopened at night.
