After 10 years in office, Christian Amsler (FDP) clearly missed reelection to the cantonal government of Schaffhausen. His seat went to SP candidate Patrick Strasser.

In the run-up to the elections, Amsler was criticized for irregularities at the cantonal school’s dental clinic and the dismissal of the rector of the vocational training center.

On Sunday he achieved the worst result of all the candidates. Shortly before 5 pm, 25 of 26 parishes were counted. The last remaining municipality can no longer significantly influence the result.

In 2018, Amsler was portrayed as a possible candidate for the Federal Council by the Schaffhausen Liberals. However, the FDP decided in favor of Karin Keller-Sutter in the nomination process.

In addition to Strasser, Dino Tamagni (SVP) was also recently elected to the governing council of Schaffhausen.

The former councilors of the Schaffhausen government, Martin Kessler (FDP), Cornelia Stamm Hurter (SVP) and Walter Vogelsanger (SP), were re-elected.

Still a bourgeois majority

With two vice-presidents, two representatives from the SP and one from the FDP, the majority in the Schaffhausen governing council remains in bourgeois hands.

There was no change in the low proportion of women in the five-member government of Schaffhausen; Apart from the Hurter tribe, no women stood for election.
