The accident occurred near the Reichenau train station. The cars of a 58-year-old German driving from Chur to Thusis shortly before 8 am and a 25-year-old Swiss driving in the opposite direction collided violently for reasons that are not clear, as the Graubünden cantonal police wrote.
According to police, an 83-year-old driver from Germany, also driving south, was unable to avoid a rear-end collision. A total of nine people suffered minor to serious injuries. They were taken to hospitals in St. Gallen, Chur and Schiers GR.
In addition to the police and the road rescue service, two helicopters and several ambulance teams were on duty at the scene of the accident. The road was closed for about three and a half hours and traffic had to be diverted. The cantonal prosecutor’s office and police began investigations into the course of the accident.
