A wave of violence has erupted in Malmö, Sweden, after anti-Islamic activists publicly burned a Koran. The action soon degenerated into protests and then chaos. Muslims and the police participated in intense street fighting. According to Islamic Sharia law, death is based on burning the Quran.
Some 300 people had gathered around 7:30 pm on Friday along a main trafficking axis in a Malmö neighborhood that was predominantly inhabited by migrants. This after reports that members of a right-wing extremist party had previously organized the burning of a Quran, Islam’s holy book.
Calls of “Allahu akbar” and street battles
The angry crowd grew rapidly. Fires soon broke out along the road and several cars caught fire. Police spokesman Rickard Lindqvist spoke to a local news channel about “persistent and violent riots over which we have no control.”
The Arab cries of “Allahu akbar” (“God is great”) could also be heard as tires and other debris burned and thick plumes of black smoke rose over Malmö into the night sky. An underground car park a kilometer away from the street battles also reportedly caught fire.
Right-wing extremists arrested the same day
Members of the Danish right-wing Stram Kurs (“Hard Line”) party had organized the burning of the Koran, which was followed by chaos. Activists filmed the burning of the Scriptures that took place in a public park that morning.
In order for the book to burn better, fuel was added to it. Party founder Rasmus Paludan (38) also tried to enter from Denmark on Friday.
He was denied crossing the border with a two-year entry ban, while in Malmö several party members were arrested on the same day for inciting an ethnic group. (kes)
