The shipping company Untersee und Rhein suffers from the mask requirement. There are layoffs.
The shipping company Untersee und Rhein (URh) is missing passengers. Now the company has to save. Five nautical employees were laid off at the end of September. According to managing director Remo Rey, they are seasonal employees.
The remaining 31 employees have to accept part-time jobs. For them, this means a 20 percent pay drop for up to five months.
Masks keep passengers away too
“The hope of the Swiss tourists has not been fulfilled,” Rey told SRF News. The number of passengers was 30 percent lower than usual. “After the introduction of the mask requirement on July 6, the number of passengers was reduced by a further 10-15 percent,” says Rey.
At the end of August, 53 percent of the passengers were missing compared to the previous year.
The bottom line is that the company will lose about 53 percent of its passengers by the end of August.
The shipping company Untersee und Rhein (URh) is the oldest shipping company in Switzerland. Its ships operate between Kreuzlingen / Konstanz and Schaffhausen. It generates annual sales of around five million francs.
