The video shows the graphic power of Playstation 5 for the first time, and leaves everyone breathless
Software company Epic Games announces Unreal Engine 5 and shows an impressive graphics demo on Playstation 5.
Game developer Epic Games is showing for the first time what is possible with its new 3D game engine Unreal Engine 5 on Sony’s upcoming PS5 game console. To this end, Epic Games released the technical demo “Lumen in the Land of Nanite”. It should demonstrate the graphical possibilities of the new hardware. The textures and lighting effects are particularly impressive.
Epic’s new 3D engine enables game developers to import high-resolution 3D models and textures in 8K resolution directly into Unreal Engine 5. The engine then displays as many 3D models and textures as the hardware can handle. Apparently quite a few in the case of the new next-generation console. This is made possible by the PS5’s ultra-fast SSD memory, which takes data to graphics memory extremely fast.
Epic Games believes that other game developers can use Unreal Engine 5 to achieve similar or equal graphic results in their games. It will take some time to get to the level in this tech demo on finished games. Developers would first have to learn how to get the most out of Sony’s next-generation hardware and the new 3D UE5 game engine.
Epic’s tech demo lets you look to the future, but highly successful games on the PS5 could look like this in just two to three years.
The Unreal Engine 5 should not appear until the end of 2021 and ray tracing is not used in the current “Lumen in the Land of Nanite” demo. Graphically, there is still room for improvement. Ray tracing technology has long been used for visual effects in blockbuster movies. With ray tracing, light effects, shadows, and reflections should also appear real in future in PS5 games, as has so far only been seen in expensive film productions.
Unreal Engine 5 is likely to achieve similar results on Microsoft’s next Xbox Series X. It also runs on current PCs, PS4 (Pro), Xbox One (X), and smartphones and tablets, depending on the performance of the hardware with graphics restrictions. The UE5 makes it easy for game developers to quickly port their games to different platforms.
