Explosive investigation: is there a problem with violence at the federal asylum center in Bässlergut?
Security workers are said to have regularly beaten asylum seekers at the Basel Asylum Center.
Food distribution conflicts, disproportionate actions by security guards and asbestos seekers. Records from the security service, which is supposed to ensure order at the Bässlergut Federal Asylum Center in Basel, paint a grim picture. The weekly (WOZ) and the SRF transmitted the “Rundschau” report on the documents. They were also able to speak to several asylum seekers living in the Bässlergut center.
According to reports, there is a so-called “reflection room” in the asylum center. An isolation cell that should only be used in exceptional cases and for a few hours. Records and eyewitness reports now show that security personnel use the measure disproportionately often. The protocols would show that asylum seekers had to spend an entire night in the cell, writes WOZ.
Asylum seekers disagree with protocol
The newspaper gives an example from December 2019. According to protocol, an asylum seeker refused to leave his bed. He is said to have insulted those present and exhibited “more aggressive behavior.” The security service intervened and put the man in the isolation cell. Along the way, the asylum seeker is said to have stumbled upon a door frame. Finally, he then complained of abdominal pain and was rushed to the hospital.
WOZ spoke to the interested person. He told the newspaper: “I was sick and I didn’t sleep all night. The Securitas arrived in the morning, it was very cold, but they opened the window and took off the blanket. They would then have taken him and punched him in the stomach several times in the cell.
Several asylum seekers have made serious accusations against security personnel against SRF: “The Securitas are constantly looking for trouble in order to fight,” says Lotfi Rezgani, a Tunisian asylum seeker.
The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) operates the Bässlergut Asylum Center. The WOZ SEM writes about the allegations: “We have no evidence that security service providers in Basel or other federal asylum centers use excessive force. The SEM would not tolerate this and would sanction accordingly. ”
However, security service employees confirm that the isolation cell, which should be used as a last measure, is used almost every day. This would result in two or six conflicts per week, in which one would have to intervene. (chmedia / cma)
