Consequently, tenants of commercial properties like restaurants or boutiques should only pay a third of their rent if the landlord agrees. The canton pays another third, while the owner gives up a third of the rental income.
The Basel Parliament approved the supplemental loan of 18 million Swiss francs on Wednesday at the Basel Congress Center with 95-0 votes. All political groups supported the proposal and, above all, praised the voluntary nature of the solution.
Under the government bill, net monthly rents of up to a maximum of CHF 20,000 are taken into account. The cantonal contribution is a maximum of CHF 6,700 per month.
Corona rental help for Basel companies: the #GrosserRatBS approves CHF 18 million unanimously. As long as the landlord and tenant agree, each pays a third, the canton a third of the rent, max. April June. More: https://t.co/LvwRRctcso

A prerequisite for the cantonal contribution is that the tenant does not fire any of his employees for financial reasons or continues to work in worse conditions. This self-declaration cannot be controlled, said CFO Tanja Soland (SP). But tenants are supposed to keep their word.
As Soland also said, the loan not only gives tenants of small business premises the possibility of a rental exemption, but also larger ones. This is because the rent for commercial properties in Basel-Stadt is generally less than CHF 20,000. According to Soland, only a small part pays more.
Proposed by various associations
The template will take effect retrospectively on April 1. The cantonal contribution is limited to the months of April, May and June 2020.
With advice, the Basel government is implementing a corresponding proposal from the Homeowners Association, the Tenants Association, the Home Owners Association and the SVIT Real Estate Management Association. In April, they agreed on a so-called “three-thirds rescue package.” The proposal was forwarded to the government by the Grand Council through a motion.
With today’s decision, Basel-Stadt anticipates a national solution. In early May, two motions from the Economic Commissions (WAK) of both councils, which had requested a lease agreement for business, did not come through the National and State Councils.
