The news of Irene Schönbächler’s departure saddened many of her former employees and superiors. Even if it was not a surprise for his next acquaintances, his premature death affects us all.
As Head of the Department of Economics and Home Affairs responsible for the Aargau Cantonal Police and as former President of the Hitzkirch IPH Intercantonal Police School, I was able to work closely with Irene Schönbächler for about eight years. During this time I got to know and appreciate his high level of social and technical competence.

Growing up at Rikon and Turbenthal, Irene Schönbächler initially completed an apprenticeship as a pharmaceutical assistant. After his first professional experience, he joined the Thurgau Cantonal Police Police School in 1988 and worked there until 1994 as a police officer. Irene Schönbächler also completed her Matura school and then a political science course with a specialization in ‘Public Management’ at the University of St. Gallen.

On August 1, 2003, Irene Schönbächler joined the cantonal police in Aargau as head of the civil department in the command area. The appointment as captain and, therefore, the first police officer of the cantonal police in Aargau was made on January 1, 2005. From March 2007 to February 2008, he was entrusted with the provisional management of the department of ” Mobile Task Force “.
After briefly heading the “Command Areas” department again and completing a study stay at the FBI in Virginia / United States, she was appointed head of the “Kapo Nord” department in mid-June 2008. In this role, Irene Schönbächler He worked until he left the body of the Aargau Cantonal Police in late February 2015.
On April 1, 2015, Irene Schönbächler was chosen by government advisers from the eleven cantons concordat as successor to Acting Director Urs Winzenried as director of IPH as the largest Swiss police school. In my previous role as President of IPH, I looked forward to working with Irene Schönbächler in developing basic police training.
Confidence even after the tumor was discovered
In late November 2015, Irene Schönbächler had to inform me that she had been diagnosed with a tumor as part of a routine examination. However, he was confident that he would be able to take over his management job again in early 2016. Unexpected complications delayed the job. With her basic positive attitude and great inner strength, Irene Schönbächler was convinced that she could overcome her illness. After changing the phases of hope and health problems, Irene Schönbächler finally had to resign her position as director of the HPI in late September 2018 due to illness.
Irene Schönbächler had long known that she would lose the fight against her disease. However, the last months of his life were characterized by his bravery and humanity. Just a month ago, she wished me a good recovery from my own coronavirus illness. On May 8, 2020, Irene Schönbächler died three months after her 54th birthday.
Our thoughts go out to her husband Paul Horber and the grieving family. We wish everyone a lot of strength and confidence for the next time. We will remember Irene Schönbächler with grateful memories.
