The production of the St.Gallen festival will not take place this year. Regulated trial operation is not possible during the crown crisis, the planning uncertainty is too great.
(pd / lim) After the closure of the Federal Council, the St. Gallen Concert and Theater canceled all performances and theater concerts. With one exception: the last option was to keep the festival open as long as possible. Now it is final: the St. Gallen Festival will not take place this year either.
A concert and theater in St. Gallen are forced to make this “painful decision,” as stated in a press release. After all, the roadmap to normality after the crown pandemic does not allow for the assumption that the tests will be conducted within the required period.
Similarly, the planning uncertainty regarding events with fewer than 1,000 visitors remains, and the question of opening borders remains open. Werner Signer, the managing director of the St. Gallen Concert and Theater, says:
“This shattered the last hope that this exceptional season could still be brought to an artistically worthy conclusion. We feel sorry for our loyal audience, for our partners and for the artists ».
Deferral is not possible
A comprehensive postponement for next year is not possible due to the long-term planning of the festival; The St. Gallen Festival program since the summer of 2021 has already been fixed. On the other hand, it will be checked if the individual parts of the program can be integrated into the Festival in a maximum of two years.
Since 2006, the St. Gallen Festival has been the culmination of the concert and theater season, attracting thousands of people interested in culture from near and far, and bringing internationally renowned artists to St. Gallen. The people in charge kept the option to perform to the end, even after regular playtime in the theater and auditorium had to be canceled and the festival opera was prematurely moved from the monastery courtyard to the theater for planning reasons .
The 15th St.Gallen Festival should have taken place from June 26 to July 10, 2020. With its cancellation, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Stiffelio” is still waiting for his first performance in St. Gallen, and the dance piece Bulgarian choreographer Dimo Kirilov Milev’s “Against the Stream” cannot be performed. The motto of the concert program was “Variedades de amor”.
