Scottish highland cattle ensure that reeds do not take over the nature reserve. Moderating legends Matthias Hüppi and Bernhard Russi participate.
It was an “idea of the regulars’ table,” says Bernhard Russi. At the end of his moderation career on Swiss television, he and his former partner Matthias Hüppi argued more than jokingly that in the future they would breed Scottish highland cattle.
Flüeler’s businessman, Franzsepp Arnold, took both of them at his word. Because for the nature reserve in the Uri Reuss Delta, I wanted to settle exactly that cattle. Ski legend Bernhard Russi says:
“We decided not only to make great sayings, but to participate in a project.”
This has been a reality since Tuesday afternoon. Two cows were transported from the Herger family farm in Isenthal to their new home on Lake Uri, where they were received by Russi and Arnold. Matthias’s cattle will follow later. He has to solve his football problems first, “said Russi, who refers to Hüppi’s work as president of FC St. Gallen.
«You look at the site without a farmer»
The new animal home is at the bottom of Arnold & Co. AG, which extracts gravel in Lake Uri. A nature conservation project was one of the requirements for the license. In Seedorf, a two-hectare marsh area has been created right next to the bathing islands, a habitat for birds, amphibians and reptiles. Highland cattle will now make sure the reeds don’t take over. “You look at the site without a farmer,” says businessman Franzsepp Arnold. The canton has developed a corresponding grass concept. Arnold admits:
“It is an attempt at the moment. We will see if the three animals are sufficient.
Long-horned and large-horned animals will spend the coldest months in the Reuss Delta. In summer, however, they flock to their traditional herd in the Alp at Isenthal. “We are already waiting for you,” says breeder Angelina Herger.
“For me, cattle are members of the family. We accompany animals from birth to the last minute when they have to be slaughtered.
Each animal has a name that it even hears when you call it from the grass. “They are animals of character that are very calm,” says Angelina Herger. “If you don’t bother with them, they don’t want to know anything about you. But if you come with bread, cakes and stands, you are your friend. The Herger family lives on direct marketing, which is not easy at Isenthal. Meat is considered particularly healthy.
Soon there will be offspring
Highland cattle are also suitable for the Reuss delta because they are particularly easy to care for. Therefore, no human help is needed when a young animal is born. And that will soon be the case in the Reuss Delta: Russia’s ox Aurora is pregnant and will give birth to a calf in the coming days or weeks.
“We still don’t know what will happen when the herd grows,” says Bernhard Russi.
“It certainly is a goal to go through the Reuss Delta more frequently in order to build a relationship with animals.”
