The other participating countries are Russia, Iceland, Italy, Sweden, Bulgaria, Denmark, Malta, Lithuania and Azerbaijan. Victorious for Switzerland: Gjon Muharremaj. The singer of Albanian-Kosovar descent operates under the name Gjon’s Tears. He was awarded the contract for his melancholic ballad “Répondez-moi”.
For Iceland, Daði Freyr, born in Reykjavík and based in Berlin, and his band Gagnamagnið sing the electro pop song “Think about things”. For Sweden, the soul and gospel group The Mamas («Move») will compete, for Russia, the self-ironic punk-pop rave band Little Big from Saint Petersburg («One»).
The top ten finalists were announced Sunday night at the end of the “World Wide Living Room – ESC Semifinals 2020” program, which was on ARD Channel One. It can also be seen on playlists such as YouTube and the ARD media library. Viewers can choose their favorites from 40 contributions online or by televoting. Germany as the 41st ESC participant this year was not voted.
Germany included anyway
In the nearly four-hour semi-final broadcast with some sound issues, Dennis and Benni Wolter from Cologne presented the 41 nominated ESC 2020 participants with music videos. They received the support of Youtuber Freshtorge and joined from Hamburg the “Grand Prize of the Lord” Peter Urban.
There was also the Ben Dolic clip (“Violent Thing”), but the German participant was not available. Even with the regular ESC, people in Germany cannot vote for the German contribution. So it was not used here.
The regular Eurovision song contest in Rotterdam was canceled due to the crown pandemic. On May 16, the ESC replacement program now consists, among other things, of a program in which German viewers must choose their “heart winner”.
End next week in front of empty rows
The “Eurovision Song Contest 2020 – the German Finale” show will be moderated by Barbara Schöneberger on May 16 between 8:15 p.m. and 9:55 p.m. live from the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie in front of the empty seats.
Subsequently, a non-voting international replacement show called “Europe Shine A Light” by Hilversum can be seen in the Netherlands. The private channel ProSieben also organizes a “Free European Song Contest” of approximately four hours on May 16, organized by Stefan Raab. It is moderated by Steven Gätjen and drag queen Conchita Wurst, who won the ESC for Austria six years ago.
Last year in Tel Aviv, Duncan Laurence won the competition with “Arcade” and in fact brought ESC to the Netherlands. The world’s largest music competition would have taken place in the Netherlands for the fifth time. Originally, he was supposed to host two semifinals on May 12 and 14 and the grand final on May 16.
