“Many athletes were sick”: did the corona virus arrive in Europe in October?

The corona virus has been spreading worldwide for months. However, it is not entirely clear when exactly the virus reached Europe. The first cases were officially only in January, however there are signs that the virus may have reached Europe last fall.

Italian fencer Matteo Tagliariol reports that some athletes had already suffered from a virus at the World Military Games in October in Wuhan. “A lot of people were sick at the time,” the 2008 Olympic champion told ANSA news agency. “After a few days I also had a bad cough.” Then the doctor informed him that many others also had the virus.

The World Military Games took place in Wuhan from October 18 to 27, 2019. The first case of infection was officially reported in China in December. However, it is speculated that the coronavirus has already spread.

Son and wife also fell ill

After her trip home, the symptoms worsened, says Tagliariol: “A good week after my return, I was in very bad shape. I had a fairly high fever that did not drop below 37.5 degrees in about three weeks. “

The antibiotic prescribed by his doctor didn’t help either, Tagliariol continued. He only recovered three weeks later, after which his two-year-old son Leo, and later his wife, became ill.

Then, months later, when the coronavirus was reported, Tagliariol recognized the symptoms: “I’m not a doctor and I don’t know what I’m doing, but I thought I had this virus.” I found it very similar. I also had respiratory problems, I have asthma, but I had my last attack when I was 18 years old. In the 19 years after that, never again. »

More about corona virus in sports:

Tagliariol told Corriere della Sera that he did not yet know if it really was the corona virus. The shooter has not yet been tested. He wants to make up for this, but only when the overall situation has calmed down a bit.

According to the French newspaper L’Equipe, pentatlists Elodie Clouvel and Valentin Belaud were also likely infected at the games in Wuhan. (dab)
