The army recovered and transported the grenade discovered on the Grenzacher seafront in Basel on Saturday morning. Construction workers found the grenade in the Rheinbord during dredging work on Friday night.

During rescue work, the cantonal police in Basel-Stadt blocked Grenzacherstrasse for approximately three and a half hours from eight o’clock, as he wrote in a message. The Basel-Landschaft police blocked Birsköpfli in front of the site.

Informed residents

Prior to the rescue, cantonal police had informed residents of neighboring properties that they should open windows on the Rhine side and keep stores closed.

The night before, the police had to close the Grenzacherstrasse between Allmendstrasse and Solitude and Birsköpfli until around midnight. The specialists assumed an explosive device of German origin from the First World War.
