Police and firefighters spent three days searching for a 94-year-old retiree with a large contingent. Last Thursday, the insane man ran away from his wife while she was shopping and did not appear again. After two nights in the open air, rescuers found him alive Saturday afternoon.

The elderly man, who suffers from dementia, walked unnoticed Thursday morning from the EO Tychboden Oftringen shopping center. His relatives reported the man’s disappearance in the early afternoon. Various search measures began on Thursday. They were unsuccessful and had to be detained overnight. The search continued on Friday using police dogs and a helicopter.

The missing report was unsuccessful at first

The man, who measures 168 cm, is of normal height and is bald, wearing a brown jacket, black pants, black shoes and a brown baseball cap at the time of the disappearance. Aargau canton police issued a missing report with this description on Friday. But this did not lead to success for the time being, the man was not found disoriented.

After a 3-day search: 94-year-old retiree from Oftringen found again

Police and firefighters spent three days searching for a 94-year-old retiree with a large contingent. Last Thursday, the insane man ran away from his wife while she was shopping and did not appear again. After two nights out in the open, rescuers found him alive this afternoon.

On Saturday, according to a contribution from Tele M1, about 25 firefighters were looking for the man with thermal imaging cameras. It was to be feared that the missing person had drowned in nearby Tychbach. The search is very stressful, Fernando Volken, commander of the Oftringen fire brigade, told the regional station: “You have to assume that even the worst case can happen and we will no longer find the missing person alive.”

In the early afternoon there was a surprise: a private dog handler who had voluntarily joined the search operation found the missing person on the premises of a commercial company, according to cantonal police. The man was lying on the loading ramp of a company in the industrial park, apparently having spent two nights in the open air and survived.

“We are very astonished to have found this old man alive,” Bernhard Graser, spokesman for the cantonal police, told Tele M1. The more so since it was relatively cold at night and it also rained heavily. The missing person was immediately taken to the hospital by ambulance after rescue.

It was still unclear how hard the two nights out in the open had affected him. Only one day later, on Sunday, the case took a tragic turn: as Tele M1 reports, the old man died in hospital.
