There has been a strong earthquake in western Turkey. State news agency Anadolu reported on Friday that the epicenter of the 6.6 magnitude earthquake was in the Aegean Sea near Seferihisar in Turkey’s Izmir province.

Turkish media reported at least four dead and 120 injured.

The tremors were also felt in Greece. The island of Samos has been particularly affected, where there have been reports of damage to buildings.

Turkish news channel TRT showed images of a collapsed building in Izmir and reported panic in the streets during the earthquake. Telephone connections were interrupted. There was a tsunami both in Izmier and on the Greek island.

Large clouds of dust could be seen on the television images over the city. The governor of Izmir said in an interview with the television channel that no precise information on casualties or damage has been provided so far. According to Anadolu, the earthquake occurred at 2:51 pm local time. (sda / dpa)
