On Mount Everest there is now cell phone reception according to the super fast 5G standard. Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei and mobile operator China Mobile conquered the highest mountain in the world at 8,848 meters on the north side with three base stations. The companies announced Saturday. Climbers, scientists and surveyors can use the services in the future without having to carry expensive and heavy satellite phones with them.
The three mobile radio stations were installed at 5,300, 5,800 and 6,500 meters. According to this information, however, they are only temporary. 5G reception is primarily used for a new Mount Everest survey. Base stations are to be decommissioned again this year after work is completed.
More than 150 employees in action.
Digital climbing takes place 60 years after the first ascent of Mount Everest from the north by Chinese climbers and 45 years after the first most accurate measurement. China Mobile says it has deployed more than 150 people to install and maintain the facility. For this purpose, 25 kilometers of fiber optic cables were laid in the icy mountain areas.
