Who wins the presidency is still open. In crucial states, incumbent Donald Trump initially seemed to have an advantage, but that changed part of the night, with challenger Joe Biden winning Michigan and Wisconsin. Analyst Christian Lammert explains the situation.
SRF News: Joe Biden confidently said 24 hours ago that he would win the election. Does the current state give you the right?
Christian Lammert: Yes, we are currently seeing a trend that proves you right. This is because in the United States only votes cast on Election Day were counted. Vote-by-mail documents will only be counted later. Biden is expected to have a clear advantage in votes cast by mail. You can see that now – he was able to shoot Michigan and Wisconsin. In Pennsylvania it’s catching up on a massive scale. In Georgia it is also increasingly scarce for Donald Trump.
Biden’s victory in the key disputed states is or was in some cases very close. Trump’s team wants to count in Wisconsin. Experience has shown that can this change the situation?
Counting is possible. If it was less than 0.2 percentage points, it would have to be counted automatically anyway. A campaign can request the count up to 1 percentage point, but must pay for it itself. It will cost about $ 3 million in Wisconsin.
The electoral campaign has shown that the judges obey the law, including the judges he has appointed, and that they do not act politically either.
But Trump probably has no problem with that. But history shows that so far it hasn’t worked. All the accounts have confirmed the result.
Another important state is Pennsylvania, there is still a count, and Trump wants to force a count stop by legal means. Are you allowed to do that?
I am pessimistic that it will achieve any success. There are electoral laws in Pennsylvania. They regulate that voting ballots that have been received up to the day of the elections, have postmarks and have been received at a certain time on Friday, will be taken into account. This legal position is clear.
Trump will not find a court to challenge that. He hopes his conservative judges will be by his side, but the election campaign has shown that judges abide by the law, including the judges he nominated, and that they are not politically active either.
Conclusion: The elections have not yet been decided, Joe Biden is ahead, but Donald Trump reserves the right to take legal action. What can we expect before the official result?
The Trump administration smear campaign is currently beginning, emails are being sent and tweets are being made that supporters should fight back. We are already seeing the first protests in front of the electoral counting stations.
I think it’s getting a little dirtier now. The scenario that was feared for Election Day will come now because the Trump administration cannot and does not want to see that it will narrowly lose this election.
