Explosive device of German origin
As stated in a message, the cantonal police in Basel-Stadt had to close Grenzacherstrasse between Allmendstrasse and Solitude on Friday night and, with the support of the Basel-Landschaft police, Birsköpfli on the opposite side of the Rhine to around the midnight. The reason was a grenade that construction workers had found shortly before 6 p.m. during excavation work at the Rheinbord on the Grenzacher promenade.
Specialists from the KAMIR command (specialized agency for the elimination of ammunition and mine clearance by the Swiss army) assume an explosive device of German origin from the First World War. The length is about 65 centimeters and the diameter is 18 centimeters, it says in the message.
Swiss Army specialists deal with their recovery and removal on Saturday morning. During this work, the cantonal police will temporarily block Grenzacherstrasse and Birsköpfli again. He previously informed residents of neighboring properties that they should open windows on the Rhine side and keep stores closed.
