The weather didn’t play well in Semmering either. The second race of the women’s World Cup giant slalom could not be held due to strong winds.
The wind had already blown during the first race. Despite the streaks, the first part of the workload could be carried out on a regular basis. However, after the lunch break, the outlook at the Zauberberg was different. The wind turned into a storm.
The organizers tried to save the second race by lowering the start and delaying it twice by a quarter of an hour. But even these measures were useless. The storm increased in strength and swept away everything that was not nailed down. Barriers in the target area were overturned, safety nets were ripped from their anchors, and advertising bands and figures were thrown into the air. The safety of the drivers was no longer guaranteed. A career in the given circumstances was out of the question.
One possibility to catch up with the second race would be on Tuesday. The first slalom event scheduled for this day begins at 3.15pm, the second at 6.30pm. A decision on the relocation of the second giant slalom is still pending.
Michelle Gisin third fastest
After the first round, the starting position was promising from a Swiss point of view. Michelle Gisin was third behind Petra Vlhova of Slovakia and Marta Bassino of Italy and thus had created a very good base for her first podium in a World Cup Giant Slalom.
The first ranking in the top three in basic discipline is behind for the Obwalden woman. He came fourth three times, this season in the season opener at Sölden and in the second race at Courchevel.
Lara Gut-Behrami Sixth
The second best Swiss woman was Lara Gut-Behrami, who was always in the top ten in the previous three giant slaloms this winter, 1.2 seconds behind and sixth despite a suboptimal run. Wendy Holdener failed to make the raise after three as expected past appearances that are still not on target. The Schwyzerin lost 1.8 seconds to Petra Vlhova. Corinne Suter, who scored points at the World Cup for the first time in this discipline two weeks ago in Courchevel, re-qualified for the second round, 2.3 seconds behind.
Camille Rast, Priska Nufer, Mélanie Meillard and Jasmina Suter missed qualifying for the second round.
