- The Young Boys win the Cup final at the Wankdorf in Bern against FC Basel 2-1.
- Marvin Spielmann shoots YB’s winning goal in the 89th minute.
- The Bernese celebrate their seventh cup, the first since 1987.
After 33 years and 4 lost cup finals, the Young Boys are lifting the cup trophy again. Bern’s last double is further behind: in 1958, YB won the championship and the cup for the last time.
The decision on the local artificial grass was made very late. Substitute Marvin Spielmann scored in the 89th minute with a long shot. FCB goalkeeper Djordje Nikolic did not seem happy. He misjudged the parade.
Just 4 minutes earlier, Guillaume Hoarau almost sweetened his farewell to YB. As a substitute, the 36-year-old Frenchman hit the left post with a header. His time is coming to an end in Bern, as is Marco Wölfli’s.
Same with the 41st goal of the season
YB rewarded himself in the cup final after an offensively weak first half for an improvement run after the break. Shortly after the break, top scorer Jean-Pierre Nsame tied the game for the Bernese.
He completed a wonderful combination across multiple seasons to 1: 1. In all competitions, it was the 41st goal in the 46th game of the season for YB-Goalgetter.
Stocker’s goal denied
FCB was the strongest team in the first half. Valentin Stocker was especially conspicuous. In the 29th minute, the FCB captain launched a volley that was worth watching for the supposed advantage. The goal was denied by VAR because Silvan Widmer was very weakly offside when the header occurred.
However, Basel took the lead shortly before the break: in the 42nd minute, Omar Alderete headed the ball into the goal after a free corner kick. Bern’s defensive association looked bad: the striker came out completely free with a header and goalkeeper David von Ballmoos did not seem entirely helpless.
Koller no happy ending
In the end, however, the Basel team once again failed to win in Bern. FCB has not won in the capital since May 2016.
Coach Marcel Koller was also denied a happy ending after a turbulent time at FCB. For him it was the last game in the Basel band. His successor Ciriaco Sforza will take over the team on Monday.
