America cares about the life of 78-year-old Joe Biden! The nervousness before the inauguration next Wednesday is growing in the country. Following the assault on the Capitol by violent Trump fanatics, US authorities are now tightening security precautions for the upcoming inauguration of future President Biden.
The Americans deployed full artillery: the National Guard wants to gather up to 15,000 troops in Washington to support local security forces. The Ministry of National Security also announced Monday an expansion of security measures around the oath. There are currently 6,000 soldiers in the capital. A new security fence was also erected around the Parliament building.
And this is exactly where the swearing-in ceremony should take place, traditionally on the west terrace of the Capitol. The inauguration of a new president is per se an event with the highest security requirements. This year, in light of the latest unrest, this is particularly true, even if the ceremony takes place in Washington without the usual mass audience due to the corona pandemic.
FBI receives warning of armed protests
Several US media reported Monday that the FBI had issued an internal warning to security forces that there could be armed and violent protests surrounding Biden’s inauguration in state capitals. An armed group wanted to travel to Washington on Saturday, according to a report by ABC broadcaster in the FBI advisory.
Short message service Twitter also warned a few days ago that concrete plans for new armed protests were already being disseminated on its platform and elsewhere. Among other things, there is talk of another attack on the Capitol and parliament buildings in the states on January 17.
The incumbent Donald Trump (74) issued an immediate emergency declaration for the US capital on Monday in anticipation of Biden’s inauguration, which is valid until January 24. This is a formal act for the capital to request assistance from federal agencies. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, 48, had asked for help.
The Secret Service is preparing a large-scale operation
The Department of Homeland Security said Monday, also at Bowser’s request, that in light of the latest events, the Secret Service would begin an intensified deployment phase on Wednesday. Originally, the large-scale operation, combined with the closure of parts of central Washington, should not begin until January 19. At the inauguration, the Secret Service in charge of protecting the President is in charge of security measures.
Biden himself was quiet Monday: he waits for the ceremony without any security concerns. “I’m not afraid to take the oath outside.” So the FBI, the National Guard, and the Secret Service are a little more nervous than the future president of the United States. (nim / SDA)
