- Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) also wins the 11th stage of the Tour de France in the final sprint after stage 3.
- The course gives little air to outliers and therefore ensures an uneventful stretch from Châtelaillon-Plage to Poitiers.
- Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) collides with Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) during the sprint and is delayed.
Four kilometers from the finish, the tension arose for the first time on the 11th stage of the Tour de France: Austrian Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-hansgrohe) attacked and wanted to outwit the sprint specialists. But the strong sprinting teams around Caleb Ewan, Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quickstep) or Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) quickly closed the gap again and thus launched the long-awaited final sprint.
Sagan punished for shoving
This sprint was extremely close and with a lot of struggle: Bora star Sagan dangerously pushed Belgian Van Aert aside with a lot of physical effort, the two-time stage winner reacted with a gesture of outrage. Subsequently, the jury moved Sagan from 2nd place to the bottom of the top group (85th place), so the Slovak did not score any points.
Ewan benefited from this encounter and eventually prevailed a few inches ahead of relocated Sagan and Tuesday’s stage winner Bennett. For Ewan it was the success of the 5th stage on the most important tour for professional cyclists.
Izagirre and Mühlberger with homework
The seemingly easy stage led to tasks on the field: Spaniard Ion Izagirre (Astana) suffered a bleeding laceration to his face and was unable to continue the tour. Austrian Gregor Mühlberger of the Sagan Bora-Hansgrohe team had to give up due to health problems. None of the 4 Swiss made a special impression. The favorites in the general classification by Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) in yellow had a quiet day.
So it goes
On Thursday, the longest stage of this year’s Tour de France is on the program (live from 3pm on SRF two). On the 218 kilometers from Chauvigny to Sarran, the course will complete 4 mountain classifications, with the last climb to Suc au May giving the outliers a chance to win the stage.
