It was a full 68 minutes before Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud provided the long-awaited first climactic moment in Corona’s exile in Bucharest. However, it was definitely worth the wait – he used an aerial kick to make it 1-0. But Giroud’s glee was nipped in the bud. Referee Felix Brych noted what all television viewers had noted for a long time: the Frenchman was clearly on the sidelines.
But why did the German referee talk to his video assistant for so long? The solution to the puzzle: the ball had come from an Atlético defender to the scorer, the goal counted. At first it looked like an assist from Chelsea’s Mason Mount.
What else happened: nothing.
It was still the lonely climax of an uneventful game. Chelsea dominated the action, occasionally getting around 70 percent possession, but missed at the latest with the notorious last pass. Timo Werner missed the best opportunities. It failed 3 times from an acute angle (15./39./84.).
And Atlético? The “colchoneros” hid behind their backs to avoid conceding a goal away from home. In addition to the expected punctures, the well-known offensive around Luis Suárez and Joao Félix barely arrived. She was left without a single shot on goal from the “Blues.” At the same time, the massive defense of “Atleti” hardly allowed anything. So the starting position before the second leg is still exciting. On Wednesday March 17, Chelsea will dance at Stamford Bridge.
