- Switzerland loses the third Nations League game against Spain in Madrid with 0: 1.
- A risky pass from Sommer to Xhaka, slipping at the stupidest moment, leads to goal.
- Xherdan Shaqiri is substituted after one hour, but cannot put any accent.
Little approved at the rear, little created at the front: this is how Switzerland’s performance against Spain is summed up. The national team held out well against the 2010 world champion for long periods, but nothing more.
Even the substitutions of Xherdan Shaqiri and Ruben Vargas after an hour did not have the desired effect. The Swiss acted more courageously after the break than in the first half. But it was almost never dangerous in the case of David de Gea.
Risky Summer, Unfortunate Xhaka
As expected, it was the Spaniards who had significantly more ball possession at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium. But the Iberians did not have numerous occasions either. The Swiss who competed with a five-man chain did a good job defensively, with one exception.
In the 14th minute, Yann Sommer made a risky low pass to Granit Xhaka in the penalty area. The Swiss captain briefly escaped at the worst possible time. Mikel Merino reacted immediately and passed Mikel Oiarzabal, who had no trouble getting the ball into the goal.
Shortly before the finally decisive scene, the Swiss gave away their most dangerous scoring opportunity by far. Loris Benito failed with his point-blank degree on De Gea’s strong save.
The final consequence is missing
Switzerland remains one point after the third Nations League game. Although the goal was unfortunate, the Spanish victory was not stolen. The hosts recorded a significant increase in chances (12: 4 agreements).
The national team, on the other hand, missed the last consequence in the forward game, like so many other times. The return of Shaqiri, who wore the Nati dress for the first time since June 2019, did not change that. The birthday boy only got the green light for a mission against Spain on Friday night after a second corona test came back negative.
Points needed against Germany
La Nati will continue on Tuesday with the game against Germany in Cologne. If Switzerland wants to avoid relegation from the A-League, points are urgently needed. The DFB team beat Ukraine 2-1 away from home on Saturday night.
