While Trump this morning promoted the disputed Republican approval ratings showing him with 96 percent support in his own party, the Monmouth poll reveals that Biden enjoys more party support than the president, at least in Pennsylvania.
Ninety-three percent of Pennsylvania Democrats surveyed their support for Biden, while 84 percent of the Pennsylvania Republicans the poll reached support Trump. Among the independent voters surveyed, Biden leads Trump by a 21-point margin: 54 percent to 33 percent.
In counties where either candidate’s winning margin was less than 10 percentage points in 2016, Biden leads Trump 54 percent to 35 percent.
Even taking into account any probing error from four years ago, Biden is clearly doing well in the swing areas. The Democrat has roots in this region that may be helping him, but there appears to be a general erosion of support for Trump compared to 2016, “Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Survey Institute, said in a press release.
Biden also outperforms Trump with respondents under the age of 50 (60 percent to 29 percent) and respondents who are 65 or older (52 percent to 42 percent). Trump has the upper hand with the white voters without a college degree who were surveyed (55 percent to 39 percent), as well as the voters aged 50 to 64 reached by the poll (56 percent to 43 percent).
As Trump continues to attack the Black Lives Matter movement and defend the Confederate flag, Biden leads the current 76 percent to 16 percent among respondents who are Black, Hispanic, Asian, or from other racial groups.
The Monmouth University poll was conducted by phone July 9-13 among 401 registered voters in Pennsylvania. The results of the complete survey have a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
Monmouth’s results are similar to a June New York Times / Siena Pennsylvania poll, which found Biden leading Trump between 50 and 40 percent among registered voters.
