Tosche station removed the scene from Star Wars: a new hope paints a fascinating picture of early plans to develop the galaxy far, far away, even if, in hindsight, it was probably for the best who remained on the floor of the courtroom. But as Mark Hamill recently reflected, one sad reason it remains largely hidden is the insight he gives to Luke’s character.

Speaking recently as a guest on the Russo Brothers Instagram Live series, the Pizza film school Hamill reflected on one of the first deleted scenes in STar Wars history. That I would have seen Luke witness the Tantive IV and Devastatingbrief battle over Tatooine before heading to Tosche to get those power converters loves to complain. There, Luke meets some friends: Camie and Fixer, but also a Biggs Darklighter returned, who graduated from the Imperial Academy that Luke desperately wants to flee himself … but as Biggs entrusts to Luke, he is I have no plans to remain part of the Empire’s regime.

meIt’s easy to see why this scene was cut from the final movie: it slows down Luke’s meeting with Obi-Wan and reach the tragedy that leads him to abandon any dream of joining the Empire and becoming a Jedi like his father before him. We do not need learn that Luke is Biggs’s friend here, because that information comes naturally when they meet how fellow rebel pilots in Yavin IV. But, as Hamill lamented, what you miss is actually looking at Luke’s political allegiances right now, and those policies are basically “whoever can get me out of this bowl fast enough has my spatial vote.”

“There are a couple of things that are good for the character: number one, his peers outright ridicule him. So it’s not particularly cool or popular, “Hamill joked.” And then I meet Biggs Darklighter, played by Garrick Hagon, and say ‘Wow!’ You can see that we are good friends. He is dressed in an imperial uniform and I say, ‘Wow! That is so cool! I can’t wait until I can get out of a planet’s dump and join you.

“The only reason that is interesting to me is that Luke has no political persuasion,” Hamill continued. “He thinks it’s great that he’s in the Empire! Luke wants to be in the Empire if he takes him off the farm! So he is completely pure in the sense that he is not politically motivated in any way, shape, or form. “

It is fascinating to see Luke throughout the scene as Biggs tells him that he has not returned home as a visitor. imperial hero Navy But say goodbye before you desert the side you really believe in. Luke is excited about Biggs’ success at the academy, because he is desperate to replicate that success himself one day.—But he’s also so excited when Biggs tells him of his plans to join the Alliance, and shouts “The rebellion !?” loud enough that the orbiting Star Destroyer can probably hear it.

There is naivety Luke here, and throughout these first moments of Star WarsAct 1: He believes that the civil war between the Empire and the Alliance is related to worlds so far from Tatooine that he cannot really reconcile why they are fighting as Biggs has already done. Anything that can get him out of the world and any kind of excitement, even signing up for the Empire, is worth it to quench Luke’s innocent passion for travel right now. That is, until he directly confronts the tyranny of the Empire when he returns to Lars’ farm to find the burning corpses of his aunt and uncle. That quickly shows you the cost of the alleged innocence!

It’s an interesting beat for Luke that we miss with this moment left on the courtroom floor, one that paints a slightly more complex morality for Star Wars‘universe though only for just a moment. You can see everything in the Disney + version of A new hope if you want to revisit for yourself, or see the wax print of Hamill on Star Wars and more specifically, The Empire Strikes Back, in the two-part episode of Russo Brothers Pizza Film School in the video above.
