Sources say the Detroit Lions have Matthew Stafford dealing with the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff, sources say.

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is heading to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for quarterback Jared Goff and a bunch of draft picks, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schaefter on Saturday night.

The Lions will have third-round elections in 2021, first-round elections in 2022 and first-round elections in 2023, the first exchange of former No. 1 overall elections in the general draft era (since 1967). The deal cannot be made official until the start of the new league year on March 17.

Following the news of the trade, the Rams Super Bowl odds for the 2021 season were moved from +1800 to +1500 in the Caesar Sportsbook by William Hill.

This is the first big move by Brad Holmes, general manager of the New Lions, who took over from Rams earlier this month, for whom he was director of college scouting. It was the role of Holmes when Ramsay traded Goff as the No. 15 pick overall in the 201st NFL Draft overall, returning to LA after 21 seasons in St. Louis. The Rams will not make another first-round pick until at least 2024.

A source told ESPN that the Lions are interested in seven or eight teams that give Stafford first-round picks in return. Although the deal for Goff doesn’t necessarily stop the Lions from taking a quarterback in this year’s draft, Goff told ESPN’s Jeff Darlington on Saturday night that he would talk to new Lions coach Dan Campbell, and Campbell made it clear in his message that Goff is in the Lions’ plans for the future.

When asked after Detroit’s final game in the 2020 season if he thought it was his final game with the Lions, Stafford said he didn’t want to go into fantasy situations. Soon after the season ended, Stafford went to Lions team president Rod Wood and mentioned that trade on both sides could be the best.

Stafford, 32, will leave Detroit as the team’s top leader in each pass category. It ranks 16th in the NFL Passing Yards (45,109) and Passing Touchdown (282), ranked 16th (6,224) and 14th in completion (3,898). His career-best 89.9 razor rating ranks 21st at all times, and his 144 interceptions are tied at 66 all-time with Joe Flaco and Steve Bartkowski.

Just behind Patrick Mahoms, Drew Breeze and Andrew Luck, to spend a yard per game (273.4) is Stafford’s all-time No. 4. It ranks second behind luck in attempts per game (.7 37..7) and fourth in perfection of game (23.6) behind Bryce, Mahoms and Matt Ryan.

Stafford joined the league as an overall pick in a draft out of Georgia in 2009 and soon became a Detroit starter. Injuries involving different shoulders blocked his first two seasons in the NFL, but he started all but eight games for Detroit since the start of the 2011 season.

When he missed the final eight games of the 2019 season due to a fracture in his back, he ended a 136-straight opening streak – the sixth consecutive longest start for a quarterback in NFL history at the time.

Stafford has suffered from many years of illness in recent years, including injuries to his ribs, ankles and right toe. He also played in 2018 with a fracture in his back and in 2016 with a proximal intervertebral joint dislocation of the middle finger of his throwing hand.

While the Lions never won the NFC North with Stafford as their quarterback, they kept it highly competitive over the past decade, as they picked up the team’s first draft after a 0-16 season in Detroit in 2008. Stafford’s eight seasons spanned 10,000,000 yards or more, and the 5,038-yard season in 2011, when he also threw a career-high 41 touchdowns. Staffford has thrown at least 20 touchdowns in each full season of his career – and at least 10 interruptions.

Stafford already has friends and a place to live on the West Coast: Stafford owns an estate in Newport Coast, southeast of Los Angeles in Orange County, and is a childhood friend and longtime friend of longtime Dodgers S. Clayton Kershaw.

Although Rams did not confirm the trade, he tweeted to Keshav via his official Twitter account asking: “Have you heard from an old friend today?”

Stafford have won just five of 16 matches against their new division opponents at NFC West. Goff, meanwhile, has won four of six against NFC North.

Goff, 26, leaves LA in October after five seasons, with a record of four and 42-27 under Rams coach Sean McVeigh. He made seven winless starts under former coach Jeff Fisher, while Ramsay hired McVeigh, known for his outspoken skills and ability to develop quarterbacks. McVeigh and Goff grew together in their first two seasons, winning back-to-back division titles and the NFC Championship together.

Ramsey gave Goff a four-year, 13 110 million guarantee with an increase of 13 4,134 million while he attended the Rams Super Bowl LIII However, the offense was never seen after the New England Patriots lost 1-3–3 in the Super Bowl, as the Rams have moved from the top-scoring team to the average unit in the last two seasons.

The points between Goff and MVQ became clear in the 2020 season despite a 10-6 record. After losing to the San Francisco 49ers 23-25 in Week 12, McWay publicly called for a quarterback for three turnovers and sought to rectify the issue. Goff has been second in the NFL with 38 turnovers in the last two seasons.

McVeigh chose to start unconfirmed free-agent backup John Wolford in a wild-card playoff game at the Seattle Seahawks, though Goff told his coach he would be ready to play 12 days after being surgically removed from his toe. A neck injury forced Wolford to leave the contest in the first quarter, and Goff, the only available backup, passed for 155 yards and touched down in a 30-20 win. After the game, Goff expressed disappointment that he had not started.

A week later, in the divisional playoffs at Green Bay Packers, McVeigh was forced to start with Wolfford from the sidelines due to his neck. Goff passed for 174 yards and had a touchdown in a 32-18 loss.

After the Packers’ game, when asked if Goff is his quarterback, McWay said, “Yes, he’s our quarterback now.”

Earlier this week, when asked frequently about the future of quarterbacks with the Rams, Rasmus general manager Les Snyder did not give Goff a public vote of confidence.

“Moving on from Jared Goff, it’s … the money we’ve invested in him, it’s not easy to control,” Snead said, adding later that “anything can be done” in a cap-based system.

The Lions will face the Rams next season at Sophie Stadium.
