Sounders FC forwarded Freddie Montero



Seattle, wash. – Seattle Sounders FC announced today that it has signed Freddie Montero. The Colombian returned to Seattle, where he played from 2009-2012, winning the Sounders FC’s Golden Boot in the club’s first three MLS seasons and amassing 47 goals and 34 assists in a regular-season game. After playing abroad in Colombia, Portugal and China, Montero has spent the last four seasons with Vancouver, where he has scored 26 goals and helped 14 Whitecaps FC. Montero is signing one-year deals with club options in 2022 and 2023, and is ready to join Sounders FC in advance following mandatory quarantine and testing protocols.

“Freddie is a niche forward who has proven himself at MLS and abroad, in addition to still holding many club records here,” said Garth Lath Garvey, general manager of Sounders FC and soccer player. “When good players return to Seattle, it speaks to the strong culture we have created. I look forward to bringing them into the group and seeing what they can contribute to our attack. ”

Montero, 33, first joined Sounders FC from Colombia’s Deportivo Cali in 2009 before the club’s inaugural MLS season. He led Rev. Green in scoring every year from 2009-2011 and scored a double-digit goal in each of his four Seattle seasons. Montero’s 47 goals and 34 assists for Seattle in a regular season game are the most connected in club history with Clint Dempsey and Mauro Rosal, respectively, and his 60-goal franchise record in all competitions.

After the 2017 season, Montero will play Colombia’s Milonarios and Portugal’s Sporting CP. Together he went on a loan pairing, which he later joined on a permanent transfer in January, 2001. Montero scored 27 goals in three seasons in Portugal before moving to a Chinese club. Tianjin Tigers FC, where he scored nine goals in his 2016 campaign. After a 13-goal loan to Vancouver in 2017, after six supporting seasons, Montero returned to Whitecaps FC for the 2019 and 2020 seasons, before Sporting C.P. Played one more season together.

Montero’s signature Sounders brings FC’s current roster to 23 players. The club launched its 2021 preseason at Starfire Sports this week, with the MLS regular season set to open on the weekend of April 17.
