The smallest population servers in World of Warcraft will merge with the busiest in a process that will take all summer, Blizzard announced today. This is not the first time that WoW has crushed servers together, but this will be a welcome change for players trapped in dead realms who don’t want to pay for an expensive server transfer.
Blizzard made the announcement on the WoW forums, saying that it realizes that certain cross-realm features, like being able to have fun and dungeon with players from different servers, are not a complete solution to being stuck on a low population server. “From your history with your guild to your interactions with the economy around you, a kingdom with a healthy population offers more opportunities, and it has been several years since we last connected some kingdoms,” Blizzard wrote.
Blizzard recently completed a “comprehensive study” of various WoW servers and has identified several that will be merged with larger servers. However, the merger won’t happen all at once, as Blizzard will slowly merge realms every week for the next two to three months.
“As this project unfolds, we will post notices prior to weekly connections in appropriate regions and languages,” Blizzard said. “During each maintenance period, everything will automatically combine for the affected realms. When maintenance is complete, players in the affected realms will log into Battle for Azeroth and discover that they are now part of a larger connected kingdom community. By At the same time, we will merge the appropriate domain discussion boards. “
Honestly, that’s great news, especially with the new Shadowlands expansion coming out later this year. Being in a dead realm is a serious nuisance, and server transfers are ridiculously expensive. So if you are not satisfied with where your character is at, it may be worth waiting to see if your chosen server will merge before jumping off the ship.
