Wednesdays America’s Got Talent showing live quarter-final results was a typically bittersweet affair, with several worthy acts being cut. Nolan Neal, a former frontman of Hinder, recovered addict, and twice The Voice competitor whose probably one last shot at star was via AGT, went home, like twice The Voice Australia competitor Sheldon Riley, a fascinating fashionista and torchbearer who shared a touching moment with Judge Heidi Klum the night before. Polarizing comedian Usama Siddiquee, whose exchange with Heidi at Tuesday’s show had not so hot and indistinct, was also, less surprisingly, eliminated.
But at least AGT had a few good moments this Wednesday – mostly a surprising reunion between new judge Sofia Vergara and her old Modern family co-star, Ed O’Neill.
Host Terry Crews was conducting a virtual Q&A session with viewers around the country, when suddenly the man formerly known as Jay Pritchett appeared on the big screen, teleconferencing Hawaii. “Oh, my man!” Exclaimed Sofia sweetly. “Where are you? I miss you so much!”
“I have to ask you a question: How did you manage to get the dream job you always wanted, where you sit all the time and someone else does all the work?” Ed asked Sofia, after which she whispered, “I do not know, Ed. God is always so good to me.”
Sofia joked then that she had not “fallen” on the job AGT yet, something that apparently was a frequent occurrence on the Modern family set. “You’ve never dropped them before – it’s like a puppet and someone cuts the strings straight down,” grinned Ed.
Ed then sent his condolences to Judge Simon Cowell, who has been out of the committee for the past few weeks after breaking his back in a freak electric bike accident, in which Sofia’s new co-star Howie Mandel said, “Unlike Sofia, by the time [Simon] falls, it’s a bigger deal. ”Recent filling judges on AGTThe live shows have included Kelly Clarkson and Kenan Thompson, so if Ed ever returns to Los Angeles from Hawaii (“Come back!” Begged Sofia), maybe he could fill that fourth seat for an episode or two.
But there were only three judges on the panel this week. That, after America was automatically voted on by aerialist Alan Silva, picked up Heidi’s Golden Buzzer Cristina Rae, and mentalist Max Major (while the aforementioned Sheldon and Usama, along with Dance Town Family, Bone Breakers, and another Australian singer, child prodigy Annie Jones, were immediately cut), and the seemingly extremely instantaneous Dunkin ‘Save voice went to Simon’s Golden Buzzer act, WAFFLE Crew, it was time for Howie, Heidi and Sofia to save one more competitor. It all came down to Nolan against drum miracle Malik Dope, and while Sofia, who is witnessing addiction in her own family, was sympathetic to Nolan’s backstory, she was voted out, with Malik in the lead.
Tune in next Tuesday, when the America’s Got Talent Season 15 quarterfinals go by faster, with 11 more acts and probably many more surprises in store.
