Social media reacts to Georgia football quarterback JT Daniels eligible for 2020 season

Georgia quarterback JT Daniels gave some important news about the 2020 season. The transfer quarterback announced Monday that he will be eligible to play in the 2020 season after the transfer from USC.

“Thank you to the NCAA for granting me immediate eligibility and allowing me to play soccer this fall,” wrote Daniels. “I won’t comment on the exemption or transfer, but I’m looking forward to a great 2020 season with my teammates.”

There were a series of initial reactions from the world of college football, stemming from the surprise that Daniels was eligible for what this could mean for fellow transfer quarterback Jamie Newman, who transferred to Georgia in January.

Daniels spent the past two seasons at USC. He started 11 games as a freshman for USC in 2018, throwing 14 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. Daniels started the opening game of the 2019 USC season, but broke his ACL in the first half. He missed the rest of the season and announced his transfer from USC in April.

Daniels has shown that he has returned to training with a knee brace on.

What makes Daniels’ situation so interesting is that he is the second transfer quarterback Georgia has brought in this offseason, as the aforementioned Newman arrived in January. Newman has received a lot of publicity this offseason, with some tabs as a possible first-round pick, while others have billed him as the Heisman Trophy favorite.

Newman brings the added threat in the running game, as he ran for 574 rushing yards last season and six touchdowns. He also threw 26 touchdowns last season at Wake Forest.

Both Newman and Daniels will play for a new offensive coordinator in Georgia, as the Bulldogs brought in Todd Monken to replace James Coley. Monken spent the past four seasons working in the NFL as an offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Newman and Daniels will have several talented weapons to target during the 2020 season, especially wide receiver George Pickens.

Of course, all of this is up in the air right now, given the concern of having a 2020 season due to COVID-19. Big Ten and Pac-12 have announced they will play conference-only games in the 2020 season. The ACC and SEC have said they will make a decision on the matter in late July.

As of this moment, Georgia still plans to open the 2020 season against Virginia on September 7 in Atlanta. The Bulldogs will be able to practice completely from August 9, although the players will be able to make tours from July 26.
