US tech giant Zoom Video Communications is opening a new research and development (R&D) center in Singapore, where it will hire hundreds of key engineers, the firm said in a press release on Wednesday.

Zoom chose Singapore for its “exceptional engineering talent” and “hopes to select an office space as remote work related to the pandemic diminishes.”

“Singapore is pro-business, ranks as one of the friendliest countries to start a business and continues to be a favorite for regional headquarters with exceptional talent, strong infrastructure, and a perfect gateway. to engage the broader Asia-Pacific region, “said Velchamy Sankarlingam, President of Product and Engineering at Zoom.

He added: “We plan to hire employees immediately, drawing on Singapore’s pool of highly trained engineering talents. Our new R&D center and data center will play a critical role in Zoom’s continued international growth.”

Said Chng Kai Fong, Managing Director of the Singapore Economic Development Board: “Zoom has changed the scope of what we thought was possible. We can work from anywhere rather than a fixed location … So I’m delighted that Zoom partners with Singapore to create an R&D center to explore possibilities. “
