SINGAPORE – A young man fled after committing multiple counts of cheating when two people cut him with knives in an unrelated fight in Chinatown during the blackout period on May 10.
Later, the police found 19-year-old Muhammed Shazryl Hykel Abdullah with lacerations to his left thigh and cut injuries to his back.
During the circuit breaker from April 7 to June 1, people were not allowed to leave their homes without a valid reason or to gather with other people from different households to socialize.
The teen pleaded guilty Monday (November 2) to two counts of cheating. He also admitted a charge for being in possession of drug utensils and being part of an illegal gathering, as well as a crime under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act.
Eight other charges will be considered during sentencing, mainly for cheating.
The court heard that a woman was in a Circular Road restaurant around 11:45 p.m. on November 15 last year when she left her purse unattended on a table.
He found that it had disappeared about 30 minutes later and CCTV footage showed an unidentified person taking it.
Deputy Prosecutor Nicholas Lim said a man identified as Dani Zulastri Mohamed Salim, 20, managed to get hold of their credit cards and passed them on to Shazryl the next day. Court documents did not indicate how the cards ended up in Dani’s possession.
The DPP added that Dani told Shazryl to use one of the cards to buy iPhones and sell them for cash. Shazryl did as she was told and bought two iPhones worth nearly $ 3,000 in total at Mustafa Center.
Later that day, he used another card to buy two more iPhones worth nearly $ 4,000 in total at a store in the VivoCity mall.
All four devices were later sold and proceeds totaling about $ 6,000 were turned over to Dani, the court heard. The rightful owner of the cards made a police report and Shazryl was charged with cheating on December 2 of last year.
He did not appear in court on March 25 of this year and an arrest warrant was issued against him.
Shazryl managed to evade police, but was eventually caught after he became part of a group involved in a fight at the People’s Park Center in the early hours of May 10.
The court heard that the fight broke out after a woman from a rival group was found in the company of her friends.
Two people cut Shazryl with knives before fleeing the scene. Police were alerted and officers later found him lying behind a pillar in a parking lot, bleeding profusely from his injuries. Then an ambulance rushed him to Singapore General Hospital.
On Monday, the court requested reports to assess his suitability for parole and reformatory training. Offenders sentenced to reformative training will be detained in a center and made to follow a strict regimen that includes standing exercises and counseling.
Shazryl will be sentenced on November 23. Dani’s case is still pending.
For each count of cheating, an offender can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined.
