SINGAPORE – A young man who threw a metal cup at his family’s maid, breaking her nose, was sentenced on Tuesday (September 1) to at least six months of reformative training.

This means that Ng Jia Sheng, now 20, will be detained in a facility and will follow a strict regimen that includes foot drills and counseling.

The Singaporean pleaded guilty in June to using criminal force against Ms. Estabillo Soledad Agustín in 2018, in addition to causing serious injuries by performing a reckless act.

She also admitted to using insulting words against the 41-year-old Filipino that caused her alarm, which is a crime under the Protection Against Harassment Act.

Since then, Ms. Agustín has returned to the Philippines.

Court documents said that Ng and Ms. Agustin were involved in a dispute at her family’s home on Greenwood Avenue near Dunearn Road on June 7, 2018.

Ng had asked the maid to turn on an air conditioner and was angered when she replied “in an irritated manner.”

The two subsequently argued after Ms. Agustín turned it on and threw the controller on a table.

Court documents stated that the discussion escalated to the point where both parties were yelling at each other.

The young man then spat in Mrs. Agustín’s face. She responded in kind.

Deputy Prosecutor Zhou Yihong had previously said: “During the altercation, the defendant told the victim that she was just a maid, that she was poor and had no right to be in Singapore.”

The DPP added that Ng followed Ms Agustín into the kitchen after her father intervened and separated them both.

Ng then took a metal mug, threw it at the maid, and hit her face.

She began to cry and retaliated by throwing various objects, such as plastic medicine bottles and a plastic jug, at Ng, before her brother stopped her.

None of the objects he threw hit Ng.

Then, Ms. Agustín walked out the door of the house and told another employee to call the police.

She was examined by a doctor at Tan Tock Seng Hospital later that day and was found to have sustained multiple facial injuries, including a broken nose.

Ng is now out on $ 10,000 bail and will have to turn himself in in state court on November 20 to begin serving his sentence.

For causing serious harm by a reckless act, a criminal can be imprisoned for up to four years and fined up to $ 10,000.

For using criminal force, Ng could have been jailed for up to three months and fined up to $ 1,500.

He could have been jailed for up to six months and fined up to $ 5,000 for using insulting words to cause alarm to a person.
