SINGAPORE – In a year in which travel restrictions crippled travel and hospitality globally, the Republic’s bars had a mixed performance on the list of the world’s 50 best bars, with two bars in the top 10, but two falling outside the top 50.

Atlas in Parkview Square, best known for its collection of 1,400 bottles of gin, climbed one spot to No. 4, and is also the best bar in Asia, beating Coa in Hong Kong (No. 8) and The SG Club in Tokyo (No. 10).

Meanwhile, Jigger & Pony at Amara Singapore entered the top 10 for the first time this year, ranking No. 9. Founded by husband and wife team Indra Kantono and Gan Guoyi, the bar that gives an Asian touch to classic cocktails, rose 20 spots after first entering the list at 29 last year.

It has been a successful year for the bar, which also took the top spot on the list of the 50 best bars in Asia in May.

The twelfth edition of the annual results was announced in a virtual countdown that was broadcast live on November 5 from London.

The top three spots on the list went to bars in the United States, Europe, and Greece, namely Connaught Bar in London, Dante in New York, and The Clumsies in Athens. Connaught Bar and Dante traded their top two rankings from last year, while The Clumsies climbed two spots to No. 3.

Elsewhere on the list, Singapore bars fell down the rankings. Manhattan, which ranked No. 14, dropped three spots, while Native, which ranked No. 18, dropped six spots.

Only four Singapore bars made it to the top 50 this year, compared to six last year. Operation Dagger, which closed its doors on October 31 at Ann Siang Hill, is no longer on the list, while The Old Man Singapore fell from the top 50 from 38th to 58th.

Outside of the top 50, Singapore bars also had a decent showing on the 51-100 list with the one-year-old No Sleep Club on Keong Saik Road as Asia’s highest ranked bar at 53rd.

On the other hand, Tippling Club re-entered the 51-100 list at 64; 28 HongKong Street, which ranked at No. 86, fell from No. 61 last year; while Gibson was another re-entry at No. 92.

The World’s 50 Best Bars list is compiled using votes from the World’s 50 Best Bars Academy, which comprises more than 540 beverage experts from around the world, including renowned bartenders and consultants, beverage writers, and specialists. in cocktails.

The academy is now also 50-50 gender balanced, with the voting process and results independently adjudicated by Deloitte.

For this year, the voting period was only from January 2019 to March 2020, as most bars were forced to close due to the pandemic.

“We at 50 Best hope that the announcement of the list will act as a show of force for the global bar community,” World’s 50 Best Bars content editor Mark Sansom said in a press release.

“It shows the world that even in the face of ever-changing challenges and restrictions, bars continue to do their best to continue to provide excellent hospitality experiences.”

“As we move into the next stages of the international recovery, it is vital to spread the message that bars are open and ready to receive guests safely,” he added.
