A woman praised a Gojek driver as a ‘hero’ for coming to her rescue after the car she was driving was involved in a truck accident at the junction of Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim and Jurong Port Road on August 17.
Police told Stomp that they were alerted to the accident at 12:28 p.m. and that a 49-year-old car driver and her 31-year-old female passenger were conscious when they were taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.
Police investigations are ongoing.
Magdalene Ong shared what happened to her in an article about The Pride.
In the article, she said she was driving from Jurong Port Road to Corporation Road to pick up her son from school.
His assistant was sitting in the passenger seat.
“I was driving in the center lane when all of a sudden a truck got into my lane,” he said.
She described the collision as serious enough to cause the hood of her car to smash and all the airbags to deploy.
“In a split second, I went from having a normal day to being full of fear, panic and confusion,” she said.
“At that time, I was more concerned about my assistant in the passenger seat because, after the accident, I couldn’t hear anything.
“She indicated to me that she was experiencing hearing loss due to the loud noise from the collision.
“Fortunately, her hearing returned after a few minutes.
“I was in shock, but I remember experiencing pain in both legs, back and especially in my right hand.”
Magdalene said she was stunned when Gojek’s driver, Mr. Yeo Chin Yong, came over to help her.
She said: “Things were still hazy from the collision, but I remember him saying, ‘Don’t worry, I saw everything and I’ll be your eyewitness.’
She described how Mr. Yeo helped calm her down and also called an ambulance, the Traffic Police, her son’s school, and her close friend.
“Other cars slowed around us but didn’t stop,” he said.
“All the time after the accident, Mr. Yeo waited for the arrival of the ambulance and the Traffic Police.
“He even helped me talk to the truck driver.
“After 15 minutes, the authorities arrived and Mr. Yeo assured me that everything had been well taken care of before they took me to the nearby hospital.”
Magdalena said that Mr. Yeo “saved my day.”
He helped her file a police report and even gave her advice on what to do a few days after the accident.
“I am truly grateful and touched by your heroic and kind gesture,” she said.
“It is a role model for all traffic users.”
When Stomp approached the 51-year-old Gojek driver regarding what happened, he recalled witnessing the collision around 12:30 p.m.
He stopped his car and turned on the hazard lights to alert other road users to the accident before going out to help.
“I saw a driver and her assistant inside the car,” he said.
“The assistant got out of the car and looked stunned.
“He squatted on the side of the road and held his head in pain.
“I asked him if he was okay, but he was mostly unresponsive.
“I told him to get further off the road and onto the sidewalk, for his safety.
“I checked the driver to make sure she was okay.
“Then I called the police and the ambulance, and they showed up in 10 minutes.
“After making sure the driver and his assistant were in good hands, I left the scene.”
Yeo, who has been driving with Gojek for a year, told Stomp that he stayed with the victims to make sure they were okay and got help as soon as possible.
He shared that this is not the first time he has stopped to help accident victims.
“I once witnessed a motorcyclist fall on the road,” he said.
“I immediately stopped my car behind him so other vehicles wouldn’t run him over.
“It’s not that other motorists aren’t helping, but it may take a while before someone else does.
“I think responding quickly and offering help is important as it could save lives.”
In response to a query from Stomp, a Gojek spokesperson released the following statement regarding the incident:
“We are aware of the kind act of our driving partner, Mr. Yeo, and have reached out personally to thank him.
“We hope that your act of kindness and going the extra mile for other road users inspires all of our driver-partners to remain courteous and considerate on the road.”
