He was about to have lunch at his workplace near Block 409 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3 when he saw a woman fleeing the nearby outdoor parking lot.

What surprised 25-year-old Ravi Santhoshkumar was seeing a man in a yellow jersey chasing her with a knife. She was able to escape after he attacked her, the migrant worker said.

Then an off-duty police officer intervened. Using a hoe from the workplace, the officer was able to defend himself from the assailant.

In video clips circulating online, he is seen disarming the man and subduing him with the help of six other people, including Ravi.

Police said they were alerted to the case of willfully causing harm with a dangerous weapon shortly after noon Tuesday.

A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with the case and taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.

A 27-year-old woman was transferred to the National University Hospital.

Videos of the incident show the woman with blood on her face as she approaches a passerby for help.

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News at her home after the ordeal, the woman said she did not know the man. He suddenly ran up to her and cut her, said the woman, who had injuries to her head and knees.

Ravi told Chinese night daily Lianhe Wanbao that the woman was nearly hit by a car as she crossed the road leading to the open-air parking lot while trying to escape.

Shin Min reported that the car blocked the man’s path and tried to attack the driver.

The police officer intervened to defuse the situation, but the man remained agitated. The videos showed the man yelling “Why?” before using the knife to cut yourself. It was then that the officer grabbed the man by the wrist to disarm him.

A resident, known only as Mr. Rahman, was one of those who helped subdue the man. The 59-year-old real estate agent said the knife was 6 inches long and the man was holding it tight.

Ms. Zhuo Xiuying, 64, recognized the man as a regular customer at the grocery store where she worked.

She tried to calm him down and told Wanbao that he said “he had nothing left”. Investigations are ongoing.
