SINGAPORE – A woman who sparked a fight at Huawei’s Jurong East Mall (JEM) during its over-subscribed National Day promotion last year was jailed for two weeks and fined $ 1,000 on Thursday (October 22).
Ng Puay Chin, 54, was one of several hundred people who had lined up for the promotion of the phone retailer, which offered its Y6 Pro smartphone for sale at $ 54 from July 26-28 last year. The original price of the device was $ 198.
The promotion was open only to those over 50, and each individual could only get a maximum of two outfits.
On July 26, when Ng joined the queue, there were already 300 people outside the store at 10 a.m. The store manager, Kenny Lum Zhong Ting, only had 46 tickets to give away.
Angry that he couldn’t get a ticket, Ng called Lum a “liar” and a “con man”.
Ng pleaded guilty to one count of using insulting words against Lum and one count of shoving the arm of a police officer and hitting her hand while arresting her.
Three charges were taken into consideration for his sentencing: behaving in a disorderly manner by gesturing with his hands and yelling loudly in the store, committing burglary while entering the store and illegally staying there, pointing to Lum and yelling at him to be careful. “And” be careful. “
At one point, the crowd grew impatient and rushed forward. Lum then announced that only those with tickets could purchase the device and told the crowd to disperse. Many of those who were left outside became nervous.
When the store opened at 11 a.m., the crowd rushed in, including Ng. It was then that Ng began to verbally abuse Lum. She demanded that they hand her a phone and encouraged those around her to be hostile to Lum.
Despite Lum’s requests for her to leave, Ng remained at the store. Police officers were then called in to control the crowds and deal with the dispute. Still, Ng stayed in the store even when the shutters were closed.
He then hid under the table and continued to gather the crowd. Finally, a violent fight ensued and Ng was arrested. Images of the incident were widely shared online.
Ng’s attorney, Tan Hee Joek, said his client acted completely out of line and had believed that a female police officer would arrest her.
Addressing the court, Ng tearfully said: “Now that I look at the video, I am very ashamed of myself. He had no intention of hurting the police officer. “
District Judge Toh Han Li noted that Ng “continually challenged” the police despite pleas to leave the store. The exchange lasted 15 minutes and Ng even crawled under the table to thwart attempts to make her leave, DJ Toh said.
