A 43-year-old woman, believed to have mental problems and was caught on camera causing an uproar in Ang Mo Kio, had to be restrained for her safety and that of other road users, police said.

The police statement comes in response to a video of the incident that has been circulating on social media.

The incident occurred at 53 Ang Mo Kio Avenue on Monday afternoon (December 14).

Responding to an inquiry from Stomp, police said they received a call for assistance “regarding a woman who was believed to be in low spirits and creating problems” at 4:43 pm.

“When the police arrived, they tried to involve the 43-year-old woman, but she did not want to cooperate and began to scream incoherently,” the police added.

“She also behaved erratically and aggressively near the highway crossing. For her safety and the safety of other road users, the officers proceeded to immobilize her and put her to safety.”

Later, policewomen came to the scene to help.

Police told Stomp: “The woman was detained under Section 7 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act.

“No injuries were reported during the incident.

“Police officers have a duty to protect lives and property, as well as to maintain peace and order. Male officers can detain women in the performance of their duties, without the presence of a woman.”
