Singapore: Employees who prefer to work at the office rather than at home have been able to return to the office as of Monday (September 28).

With the continued low number of new Covid-19 cases, authorities are slowly moving towards relaxing the circuit breaker measures that were imposed to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) updated its guidelines on September 23 regarding the norms and safety measures required in the workplace.

Although the MOM statement cites that “working from home is still the default mode of work,” companies can bring employees back to the workplace for better support and necessary ongoing operations.

However, it also enforces the rule that if an employee can work from home (FMH), employers must ensure that they “will do so for at least half of their work time.” This will help ensure that no more than half of the employees are in the workplace at the same time.

In addition to making wearing masks mandatory at work, MOM also encourages companies to hold virtual meetings to minimize contact between people, as well as allow employees to have flexible work hours and not all employees to report to work at the same time. It also suggests that companies allow employees to have later start times to avoid overcrowding on public transportation.

Authorities are also warning employers to beware of workers who are most vulnerable to the virus and to keep socializing to a minimum.

They also advise companies to take extra precautions when cleaning and disinfecting the workplace, in addition to providing the proper sanitation agents for employees to use in the office.

All workplaces must enforce appropriate security measures and social distancing rules, as well as appoint Safe Management Officers or SMO, whose role will be to “assist in the implementation, coordination and monitoring of the system of safe management measures in work place” .
