From reports of injured pets to bending steps, it’s definitely better to be safe than sorry when you’re on an escalator.
An elderly man who sustained multiple abrasions after falling down an escalator at Hillion Mall yesterday afternoon (September 3) was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the Singapore Civil Defense Force confirmed.
The man, who appeared to be in his 70s, was riding the escalator from the mall basement one level to basement two with his wife, a witness who works at the mall told Lianhe Wanbao.
“We heard a sudden cry of alarm coming from the escalator, then we saw an old man rolling down,” he said.
The man landed at the foot of the escalator and seemed unable to stand.
One of his colleagues quickly stopped the escalator by pressing the emergency button while another passerby rushed to a nearby clinic for help, he recalled.
A nurse at the clinic, who did not want to be named, told the Chinese evening newspaper: “[The passer-by] He said a man had fallen and that it was a bad fall. Another nurse and I, as well as a doctor, ran to the scene with a first aid kit. “
While the nurse’s colleagues tended to the man, who suffered abrasions on his arms and legs, she comforted his wife, who was crying.
Fortunately, the man did not appear to be seriously injured and was able to speak when the ambulance arrived, he added.
