Edinson Cavani has been told he will “have to get used to” his rotating role at Manchester United.
Cavani, 33, came off the bench in the second half at Leicester with the game stalled and helped Bruno Fernandes regain United’s lead.
The Uruguayan lashed out at the United winner in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals at Everton on Wednesday, but has been restricted to one Premier League start for the entire season since arriving for a deadline-day free transfer.
Cavani missed this month’s games with RB Leipzig, Manchester City and Sheffield United due to a groin injury and has completed 90 minutes just twice for United.
“Of course, Edinson has been injured for a while,” Solskjaer said. “He played a full game, it was a physically demanding game for him Wednesday night at Everton so we decided to have him on the bench. He made an immediate impact, great pass.
“It will have to be that way for a while for him now, to get used to English football and the demands of this season, because it is a lot of a start and stop and a match every three days.
“He had a great impact today and on the squad.”
Marcus Rashford felt a recurrence of a shoulder injury towards the end of Leicester’s game, having blown a free header and a one-on-one on either side of his first hit.
The 23-year-old Rashford already has 13 goals this season, nine down from the career-best 22 he scored last season, but Solskjaer regretted the opportunities United wasted in Leicester.
“Yeah he felt his shoulder a little bit, a guy tugged on his arm, which he felt, hopefully it won’t be too bad,” Solskjaer explained. “He did a full sprint afterwards so I hope he can recover quickly.
“I think with the opportunities that we create, you expect us to score more goals and with the opportunities they create, you definitely don’t expect them to score more than they do.
“I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t leave them out when they didn’t create so many opportunities and also disappointed that we didn’t score in the great moments we had.
