GENEVA: The head of the World Health Organization said on Sunday evening (November 1) that he was quarantining himself after someone he had been in contact with tested positive for COVID-19, but stressed that he had not symptoms.

“I have been identified as a contact for someone who tested positive for # COVID19,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a tweet.

“I am fine and without symptoms but I will be quarantined in the next few days, according to @WHO protocols, and will work from home,” he added.

Tedros has been at the forefront of the United Nations health agency’s efforts to combat the pandemic. It has claimed nearly 1.2 million lives and infected more than 46 million people worldwide since it emerged in China late last year.

He stressed on Twitter that “it is vitally important that we all comply with health guidelines.”

“This is how we will break the chains of transmission of # COVID19, suppress the virus and protect health systems.”

New COVID-19 cases in Europe have doubled in five weeks, propelling the region on Sunday to surpass the grim milestone of 10 million total infections, according to a Reuters tally.

Last month, both Latin America and Asia reported more than 10 million total cases in their regions. In the United States alone, there are more than 9 million cases with a rapidly accelerating outbreak.

While it took Europe nearly nine months to register its first 5 million COVID-19 cases, the next 5 million cases were reported in just over a month, according to an analysis by Reuters.

Governments across Europe have been criticized for a lack of coordination and for not using a case break during the summer to beef up defenses, leaving hospitals unprepared.
