SINGAPORE – With the pandemic keeping audiences at home, Netflix viewing across all genres of movies and television increased compared to last year in Singapore, by as much as 200 percent.

The streaming giant revealed on Thursday (December 10) the most-watched title in each genre this year and South Korean content performed excellently. K-dramas saw an increase in viewership of almost 200 percent.

The main title of the K-dramas was Lee Min-ho and Kim Go-eun’s vehicle The King: Eternal Monarch; and the longest running was Kim Soo-hyun and Seo Ye-ji’s romantic drama It’s Okay To Not Be Okay, which stayed on the top 10 list in Singapore for 103 days.

While the top performing title across different genres was announced, Netflix did not provide view numbers or an overall top 10 list.

In the horror genre, the K-zombie movie #Alive, directed by Yoo Ah-in, took first place, eliminating other popular titles such as the 2005 local film The Maid and this year’s Netflix original series The Haunting. Of Bly Manor.

And the exciting true-crime stories and social media documentary The Social Dilemma were no match for K-pop girl group Blackpink, whose documentary Blackpink: Light Up The Sky topped the documentary category this year.

The movies also did well with local audiences with Enola Holmes, the young adult story of Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister, which ranked No. 1 in the drama genre.

It faced stiff competitors like the recent chess drama The Queen’s Gambit and the urban fantasy Lucifer, now in its fifth season. The tension-filled infidelity K-drama The World Of The Married also performed well in the drama category. Viewing of plays increased nearly 70% this year.

The Singapore-set Hollywood romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians was the service’s most popular romantic film. Staying home seemed to make audiences yearn for passionate love affairs, as the audience for romance titles increased by more than 200 percent.

And despite criticism for its shallowness and unrealistic plot lines, the series Emily In Paris, about a young American who moves to Paris for work, was number one in the comedy genre. Since then, the show has been renewed for a second season.

Extraction, Chris Hemsworth’s film about a mercenary who has to rescue the kidnapped son of a drug dealer, was the most watched in the action genre.

In other assorted genres, the Spanish series Money Heist: Part 4 was Singapore’s favorite thriller; families enjoyed the animated children’s film The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019); and anime fans were filled with Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution (2019).
