It was an alarming sight: an air conditioning condenser dangling precariously from its brackets outside of an HDB floor in Choa Chu Kang.

There were only several pipes that held the condenser in place and kept it from crashing to the ground.

Photos of the faulty air conditioning condenser circulated on social media on December 18, with netizens calling on authorities to investigate the safety hazard.

A spokesperson for the Chua Chu Kang city council told AsiaOne that the city council and HDB were alerted to the air conditioning condenser hanging from its brackets at Block 340 Choa Chu Kang Loop on December 14.

The city council immediately put up roadblocks in the affected area at ground level to ensure the safety of pedestrians and the public.

On the same day, he informed the apartment owner that he hired a contractor to repair the faulty A / C condenser.

After ensuring that the air conditioning condenser was securely attached and posed no danger to the public, the barricades were removed.

Citing the incident as an example, the city council reminded residents to ensure that their air conditioning condensers do not pose any risk to the safety of the public.

Under the Building Control Act, homeowners can face a fine of up to $ 5,000 and / or jail for up to six months for improperly installing an air conditioner.

If an air conditioning unit falls due to lack of maintenance, apartment owners can be fined up to $ 10,000 and / or jailed for up to one year, under the Building Maintenance and Strata Management Act.

HDB’s home care guide advises apartment owners to regularly maintain their air conditioner to run efficiently, and emphasizes the importance of checking the brackets that hold the air conditioning condenser, as any loose bolts or improper installation can cause accidents.

In 2017, a falling air conditioning unit struck a migrant worker at an HDB industrial estate in Bedok.

The man suffered head and neck injuries from the accident.
