Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said the Red Devils could wait until the end of the season to fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Current United manager Solskjaer has continued to face the pressure this season after an uneven streak.

While his team haven’t lost in the Premier League in five games, that streak of results has been expensive. Indeed, United they have often had to come from behind to claim victory.

However, United also exited the Champions League amid that undefeated streak. As such, conversations about Solskjaer’s long-term future at Old Trafford have not disappeared.

Solskjaer is the fourth manager United have used since Sir Alex Ferguson left. In fact, Dutchman Van Gaal was fired in 2016, moments after winning the FA Cup.

However, the 69 year old has said that while Solskjaer’s status as a treble-winning club legend protects him, he insisted that the Norwegian could follow the same fate as him.

“Solskjaer is a former player, so he will not be fired as quickly as anyone else,” Van Gaal told the Daily mirror.

“United will not fire a coach during the season, especially Solskjaer. I see all the stories about Solskjaer and his future in the media.

“But they waited to fire me until the end of the season and that could happen to him.”

Much of United’s inconsistency in form is due to Solskjaer’s inability to stick to one formation. In fact, while 4-2-3-1 is his desired setup, he has played with different systems in his two years in charge.

Van Gaal also questioned whether Solskjaer is effectively training his players to adapt to different formations.

Van Gaal names Man Utd failure

“The football he brings is a counterattack. He always adapts to his opponents, ”said the Dutchman.

“And he’s playing different systems all the time. Against Southampton it is 4-4-2, in the next game there are 5 defenders, the next one is 4-2-3-1.

“You could argue that he is using the qualities of his players, but at West Ham United they were beaten in the first half.

“It was only when Marcus Rashford and Bruno fernandes They came made a difference. Using different systems is fine, but my question would be are you really adequately training players to use these systems?

“Because it is key that if you change these different game systems, it must be executed in a good way. It depends less on the quality of the players than on the actual practice of a training system ”.

United will return to action on Sunday when they face Leeds at Old Trafford.
