SINGAPORE – The Government is overseeing studies on the efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines.
It will consider relaxing measures for vaccinated travelers staying at home if the vaccines prove to significantly slow the spread of the disease, said Education Minister Lawrence Wong, who co-chairs the Multi-Ministerial Working Group on Covid-19.
But for now, Singapore will continue to take a cautious approach, and vaccinated travelers will remain subject to the same border measures and stay-at-home requirements as unvaccinated travelers, he added.
His comments come amid the rollout of vaccines in some countries around the world, including Singapore, after governments approved the emergency use of several newly developed vaccines.
But it is not yet clear how vaccines will affect travel, as it is still unknown how much vaccines can reduce transmission and infection, and how long the effects will last.
Providing updates on Covid-19 in a ministerial statement, Mr. Wong said that the government is closely monitoring several ongoing studies on the effectiveness of vaccines in reducing the risk of transmission of the Sars-COV-2 virus that causes Covid. -19.
He noted that the main benefit of the vaccine is the protection it offers to those who get vaccinated.
This means that it is also likely to reduce the spread of the virus, although the extent of the reduction is currently unknown, he said.
“If there is clear evidence that transmission risks can be significantly reduced, then we will certainly consider some relaxation in the stay-at-home notice regime for vaccinated travelers,” he added.
He said the government will refine its approach over time.
