SINGAPORE – A student at the Singapore Management University (SMU) had allegedly masturbated on top of a sleeping woman with whom he was studying in his school’s study hall in the early hours of January last year.
The court heard that the 22-year-old woman woke up with a weight on her and found Lee Yan Ru committing the act.
Lee had allegedly groped the woman’s breasts under her shirt prior to the incident, while the two were watching a Netflix show under a table in the room, according to a police officer who testified on Monday (September 7).
Lee, 24, claims a trial on a charge of sexually abusing the girl, who cannot be named, by rubbing her genitals against her chest on January 8 of last year at 6.30 am in a study room at the Faculty of Economy and Social Sciences of SMU.
He appeared in court on Monday, dressed in a black jacket and accompanied by a friend and his parents.
The first witness to take the stand was Police Officer Wong Cheuk Kay, who had responded to the victim’s call for assistance. Wong and a colleague arrived at the scene around 6.45 a.m.
Upon reaching the school lobby, Wong saw the victim sitting on a bench with Lee sitting at a distance.
The police officer then interviewed the victim, who then took him to the study room. The study room was then cordoned off as a crime scene.
The policeman added that his partner interviewed Lee, who declined to speak to police.
Invitation to study together
According to the officer, the victim told her that Lee had invited her to study together in the study room around 12 a.m. on January 8. According to court documents, the two met around 1 a.m. in front of the SMU School of Economics and Social Sciences building before Lee led her into the study hall. There, the woman studied until 2 am when she began to feel tired.
At that point, he started watching a show on Netflix, and Lee allegedly sat next to him to watch the show as well. As he watched, Lee claimed the light was too dazzling and suggested that the two move under the table, the police officer said.
While under the table, Lee allegedly placed both hands under her shirt and squeezed her breasts. She then claimed that Lee tried to kiss her but she rejected his advances.
Later, around 4 a.m., Lee reportedly fell asleep in a chair while the victim covered her head with a jacket and fell asleep on the floor. As he slept, he suddenly felt a weight on top of him. He took off his jacket to find Lee jerking off on top of him.
He then claimed that Lee ejaculated towards his facial area, with some semen reaching his hair, according to the police officer.
After the incident, Lee wiped the woman’s neck, face, and hair with a tissue and tossed them into a plastic bag.
The woman subsequently left the room towards the security desk on the first level, followed by Lee. She spoke with the building’s security officer before calling the police.
The plastic bag containing the pieces of tissue was seized as evidence. Swabs were also taken on the woman’s neck and face, and her jacket was brought in for the investigations. Tests with the tissue paper and swabs revealed the presence of Lee’s semen. No semen was found on the jacket.
The school’s security officer, Woo San Nin, was the second witness to testify, saying the woman had approached him on the morning of January 8 to tell him that Lee had “misbehaved.”
The Certis CISCO officer, who worked the night shift, recalled seeing Lee kneel down and apologize to the woman.
Although Woo couldn’t hear what Lee said, he remembered that the woman seemed “very angry” and stressed.
A police officer who took Lee’s statement testified that Lee told him that he had received harassing text messages after the incident, but no action was taken regarding these messages.
The trial resumes in the afternoon and the victim is expected to take the stand.
